How Online Networking Opened Doors for Me (And How It Can for You Too!)

How Online Networking Opened Doors for Me (And How It Can for You Too!)

As the CEO of LMF NETWORK (Like Minded Females), I’ve spent years helping professionals build confidence, expand their networks, and access career-changing opportunities. But one question comes up time and time again:

"Does online networking actually work?"

The short answer? Yes. The longer answer? Only if you know how to use it effectively.

Many of the opportunities I’ve secured, whether it’s speaking at global events, landing partnerships, or growing LMF NETWORK (Like Minded Females), have all come through strategic online networking. But I’ve also faced rejection, awkward follow-ups, and ghosting.

So how do you turn online connections into real-life opportunities? Here’s the exact process I use:

How I Turned Online Connections into Real Opportunities

It didn’t happen overnight. Networking is a process, not a one-time event. But when done right, it leads to real opportunities. Here’s the exact step-by-step approach I use:

  • Share your perspectives, critical thoughts and work (over time)

Post about what you’re learning, experiencing, or questioning in your industry. The more you share, the more visible you become.

  • Make yourself easily accessible

Your LinkedIn, website, or even your Instagram bio should have a clear way for people to contact you—opportunities won’t knock if they don’t know where the door is.

  • Say yes to the right conversations

If someone reaches out for a chat, don’t overthink it! Jump on a quick phone or zoom call when someone messages you for work, service or opportunity, you never know where it might lead.

  • Follow up like a pro

After the call, send an email outlining timelines, testimonials, and deliverables to keep things moving forward.

  • Confirm expectations early

Whether it’s a sponsorship, job offer, or speaking gig, clarity is key.

  • Plan ahead for logistics

If travel is involved, book it early to save money and reduce stress.

  • Prepare, practise and be ready to show up as your best

I never walk into a room unprepared. If you’re presenting, speaking, or pitching—practise first. Confidence comes from preparation.

  • Engage & express gratitude

At events, make sure to interact with the room, ask questions, and thank the organisers. People remember how you make them feel.

  • Take a moment to reflect & celebrate

After all the hard work, grab a coffee or a cup of chai in a local area, reflect on what went well, acknowledge your progress, people watch and celebrate the success

My Biggest Takeaway: Networking is a Long Game

Building relationships takes time. There’s no quick fix to making meaningful connections, but with the right mindset, strategy, and consistency, you can create opportunities that truly change your career.

For those of us who are neurodivergent, networking in person can feel overwhelming, which is why online platforms give us a huge advantage—we can engage on our terms, in our own time, and in ways that feel natural to us.

Key Piece of Advice

80% of opportunities come through your network—but only if you put in the work. Don’t wait for the right people to find you. Create, connect, and follow up consistently.

So What? Why Does This Matter?

In a digital-first world, your network is your greatest asset. Whether you're looking for your next career move, a business deal, or speaking opportunities, who you know (and who knows you!) makes all the difference.

If you’re struggling with networking, LMF NETWORK (Like Minded Females) is here to help. We run mentoring programs, networking workshops, and career-building initiatives to help professionals—especially women and underrepresented groups—turn connections into career growth.
